A voice is the course of a verb that shows whether the bailiwick of a sentence does the action (= the active vocalisation ) or is affected by it (= the passive vocalisation ).

active voice

Examples:

  • In the judgement "James dropped the ball," the verb "dropped" is in the active vocalisation . In other words, the course "dropped" shows that the bailiwick (James) did the activity. The sentence "James dropped the brawl" is an agile sentence .

  • In the judgement "The brawl was dropped by James," the verb "was dropped" is in the passive vocalisation . In other words, the course "was dropped" shows that the subject (the ball) was affected by the action. The sentence "The ball was dropped by James" is a passive judgement .

passive voice

The
passive voice allows the speaker to put the focus on the object of a judgement instead of the subject. ( Object = someone or something to which an action or feeling is directed.)

Normally, we utilize the active voice because we want to focus attention on the person or thing doing the action. The passive voice is used when we want to emphasize the person or affair affected by the action of the subject or to emphasize the object itself.

Example
:

Active : Emerge busy the wedding cake.

This sentence is written in the active phonation because Emerge, the discipline, performs the action (decorating) on the object (the wedding block).

We tin can rewrite the judgement using the passive vocalism to put the focus on the object (the cake).

Passive : The wedding cake was busy by Emerge.

In this judgement, Sally is no longer the discipline. The wedding cake is now the discipline of the sentence, although it is non performing the action. The action (decorating) is performed on the cake by Sally.
